history
The daughter of two of the towns most well paid surgeons, Rosalind grew up never wanting for anything...Well, except for maybe human contact. There were no family dinners or outings in the Voss household. Roz spent most of her childhood in the care of nannies or simply fending for herself. After all, Dr. and Dr. Voclain showed very little interest in their children's lives, save for areas related to academia. Their work kept them out most days and nights. Roz often wondered if they had ever even slept. Her elder brother, James, always seemed much more interested in staying out with his friends rather than dealing with the whims of his baby sister. And, with such a large home, it wasn't uncommon for family members to go days without seeing one another, even when they were all present. As a child, pressure from her parents to succeed drove most of Rosalinds's school life. The need to impress them, to make them proud, drove her into her studies and away from socializing with her classmates. None of her classmates made an effort to befriend her either. And why would they? She was the quiet awkward girl in the front of class.
From the loneliness grew childish fears, of her classmates, of her family, of the nights when she was alone. When her brother discovered her fear of the dark, he used it as an opportunity to tease her with scary stories. One in particular stuck with her, and at the age of twelve Roz became convinced that her home was haunted. How else could she explain all the creaking in the walls or creepy scratching in the attic? For almost three months she refused to sleep without the lights in her bedroom on, certain that somehow the light kept the ghosts away. That is until one stormy night, the power cut out and Rosalind was plunged into darkness. After hours of lying awake hidden beneath her blankets, the thunder faded away and the scratching in the attic started again. Something in her snapped, and her terror quickly dissolved into annoyance. She grabbed the flashlight from her nightstand and headed up into her attic. Instead of finding a ghost amongst the dust and boxes, she found a family of raccoons. Instantly, she burst into a fit of laughter. The commotion woke her mother, who was mortified to find the creatures nesting in their attic.
The event proved a turning point in Roz's life. One of her fears had proven to be nonsensical, why couldn't all of them? She could never completely rid herself from her insecurities, but from that moment on she made an effort to take her life back from the fears that had always controlled it. By the time she entered her sophomore year of high school, Rosalind's rebellious teenage faze had kicked into full swing. Sure, she had no intention of becoming a full blown delinquent or letting her grades drop. She had to get into a good college if she wanted to become a successful forensic scientist, after all. Her parents weren't going to dominate her life, though, especially since they were so rarely a part of it. She was going to stay out late if she wanted to, die her hair whatever color she wanted. She wasn't going to let her classmates scare her anymore either, though that had proven the hardest fear to conquer. Still, despite her insecurities, she became attached to a group of like minded individuals who all shared a particular common interest: the mysteries surrounding Anytown.
