Born and raised in a small town in Korea, Seong Hee lived with her parents and her twin brother Ha Jun. When she was young, Seong Hee was a chubby child. … Okay, she was fat. Unlike her brother, she was a very shy little girl who didn’t like to play basketball, or baseball, or football, or anything like that. Nope, she was the type of kid who stays in a quiet corner to read a comic book, biting in a good sandwich, because oh gosh she always loved food. Unfortunately, being overweight caused her a lot of problems : health and bullies, jealousy and extremely low self-confidence. At one point, she was almost paranoid, always thinking about what other people were saying about her. Whenever she heard a laugh or a whisper, she would think it was directed at her.
And it sucked. Soooo bad.
She didn’t have any “real life” friends, she was too shy to even dare ask someone if she could borrow a pencil. Her first friends, she met them on the internet. People on forums, on youtube, tumblr, that kind of stuff. She got bilingual over time, with the help of her mother. And she discovered the beauty of dance. It was love at first sight and it quickly became an obsession. She wanted to dance ! But she was fat… and people would laugh at her…
She still talked about it a lot to her parents and they are the ones who convinced her to at least try. So did she… And she never stopped. In fact, she loved it so much that it became her number one passion. She wanted to be a dancer in the future. So she started to train.
She literally melted. During the school year, bullies could still find reasons to laugh at her. But when she came back to school after summer holidays, she realized that people weren’t laughing at her anymore. She wasn’t the fat kid anymore. Now, she was the pretty girl, the dancing queen. Some ex-bullies even tried to become her friends. The self-confidence of the young lady was also a lot higher ; a bit fragile, but at least she wasn’t paranoid. Still, her “real” friends were a bunch of people she could only see through the screen of her computer.
When she was thirteen years old, her father died in a car crash. Life got horrible in her point of view. It took her a lot of time to accept it and the best way for her to comfort herself was… to keep going and to dance and dance and dance again. That way, she was able to blow off a lot of steam and she repaired the rest with her family. They moved to a small town in the USA, the birthplace of her mom, Eun Jong : Anytown. For Seong Hee, it was the last step in her mourning. She got way better and immediately started her new life. For Ha Jun, it was a lot harder. Sure, he also managed to get better with the loss of their father, but he was the one with a lot of friends back in Korea and he had to leave them. He took a lot more time to get used to his new life.
After they moved. Seong Hee met a certain OrangeCandy on a tumblr rp blog about a video game she loved. She started to follow the work of that person and the quickly became best friends. A couple of weeks after moving in, she started hearing strange and scary stories about equally strange and scary events going on in the town. She didn’t believe them, but that day came.
It was already pretty late, late enough for the stars to shine in the sky. Seong Hee was doing a regular jogging run and everything was normal. Her path directed her in an empty street. Enjoying the quiet atmosphere, she was running a bit slowly, taking her time to look everywhere. Then, she saw a man wearing a red suit, out of nowhere, standing beside a street lamp, staring at her with the most intense look she ever saw. He stopped her. He was creepy. The only thing she wanted to do was ignore him, but it seemed like he had a question and… actually, she doesn’t even know why she even slowed down. He smiled and said :
Enough creepiness. She shrugged lightly and answered with a small "I don’t know…" before continuing her jogging, making her way to the next street lamp… where he was waiting again. Asking the same question, in a chuckle. Seong Hee stopped jogging : she started to run. Next lamppost : still there. Always there ! Even when she was sprinting, he was there and she could clearly hear that fucking question, until she stumbled and crashed on the sidewalk… under the very first street lamp she passed across two minutes earlier, as if she never even walked there. Yet, she was out of breath and dripping in sweat, scared as hell.
Since that day, she sees a lot of strange things in the corner of her eyes. She can focus on them, but when she tries to really watch them, they disappear : ghosts. And she can’t spend a day without seeing someone in a glass, a mirror, a crowd, a car passing by… Who ? She gave him a name.
The man in red.
He’s the very reason of her interest in the strange and scary stories of Anytown. Now, she believes them. And goddammit, she really wants to find a way to get rid of them ! That’s why she joined the runaways, with a very good motivation.
