It was a typical late summer night. The heat and humidity of the day still lingered in the air, chased away for brief moments by the occasional crisp breeze that hinted at the coming fall. With most of the town asleep, the world was quiet, lacking the humming of cicadas that filled the air for much of the summer. The only sounds came from the occasional car passing by, or group of giggling party-goers returning home in the dark. All in all, it was a perfect night to sleep with the windows open....or sneak out to investigate a crime scene.
It figured that her parents would both have this night off. On most days, Roz could just walk out the front door without anyone noticing. But, this was one of those rare occasions where both doctors were present and active. The two had sat in the kitchen talking about who knows what for hours. Maybe they were concerned about the recent discovery too, though they had never shown interest in the towns mysteries before. Roz waited several hours for them to fall asleep before climbing out her bedroom window.
She had sprinted to the industrial park. Well, sprinted as much as an out of shape nerd could manage. The park itself was ominously still. It had only been a day or so since the blood was discovered. Perhaps the drifters were spooked by whatever had killed those people. Or maybe it was the police that spooked them. The cops were still lurking about. Roz could see flashing blue and red lights in the distance, closer to the tree line. She avoided them as best she could, as she ducked and wove through the maze of abandoned warehouses.
It took the better part of twenty minutes, but Roz eventually caught up with the little group of investigators. "Sorry I'm late," she gasped. She paused a moment to catch her breath. "What did I miss?"
