lu was an accident, her brother, linh, would shake his head. when their mother came home exhausted he vocally lamented lucy's existence: she was an extra mouth to feed, she was a tattling crybaby, she wasn't "full," she was a she. her mother protected her from his worst bouts (and news spread too fast in a small town for him to resort to violence), but there wasn't anything she could do when she was away working two jobs. he was the only babysitter they could afford.
linh was a jack of all trades with a seemingly endless stream of tricks up his sleeve. it was their relationship's safe haven. he didn't hate her when he was showing her how to pick a lock or hack a phone, and she was quick enough not to test his patience. she worked hard to take advantage of his knowledge before he inevitably left for the city.
lucy vlogs on youtube outside of snooping and schoolwork, recording everything from boy advice to makeup tutorials and shitty dance covers. (q&a's are the best because she gets to talk about herself the whole time.) her channel only has a few hundred subscribers max, but the recent videos of mystery solving could end up drawing unwarranted attention.
granted with the honor of inside intel and early admission to cfsa, she saw the gradual shift in her mother towards apocalyptic paranoia. their outings to buy survival gear and take wilderness classes were extreme and embarrassing, but she wasn't letting her mother suffer being called a loony alone. that being said, mother dearest was nearing inconsolability, and lucy was quite sure the only likely way to get her to calm the fuck down was solving the mystery once and for all.
