history
Caroline was raised in a decently sized town not too far off from the capital of Iowa. Her family was well off, living on a few acres of farmland on the outskirts of town in a sizable house. Just a normal family in a normal town living a normal life. Being the only child of a well off couple, Carie was never in want. If she wanted something her parents were chomping at the bit to make sure that desire was satisfied. That being said they didn't have any interest in raising a spoiled brat. There was a lot of work to be done on their land, and she was always the first in line to get things done whether she liked it or not. At the same time, her father also wanted to be sure that she wasn't stuck living as a farmhand for her entire life. Just as much emphasis was put into instilling knowledge as work ethic. She never had much free time between work, school and her frequent tutoring sessions. Her friends were few and the time spent with them was limited, but she never seemed to mind too much.
As with countless stories of normal families, Caroline's takes a sharp turn when tragedy struck her town. When Carie was sixteen, she and her father were working in the fields when a massive tornado touched down in the distance. Her mother was in town running errands, forcing the other two to seek shelter without her. Caroline and her father took refuge in their cellar, waiting anxiously for the storm to pass. When the winds had calmed and they arose from the cellar they found their home to be severely damaged, likely beyond repair. In the tornado's random destruction, they were lucky enough to be left with a working vehicle. Without hesitation the two of them drove to the city to search for her mother in hopes she found shelter in time. Much to their dismay there was no such news, as they quickly found that her name was among those lost in the storm.
They stayed in town for a while, checking in with family friends and seeing if there was anything that could be done to help those in immediate need. After spending a few hours in town they determined it was time to head back home to try and salvage their own property. As they approached their home, the two found that a small group of looters had already taken it upon themselves to see what could be looted from their home. Perhaps they thought that there wouldn't be any witnesses in a more remote area and they could do as they pleased without consequence. That would explain their shocked expressions when the angry Mr. Aldrin came barreling down the driveway. The distraught man grabbed the pistol from the glove box and told Carie to keep her head down and stay out of sight in the car. Between the pain of losing his wife and the stress of losing his home, he wasn't willing to take anymore punishment. He exited the vehicle and approached the group, shouting at the top of his lungs.
Everything that happened after that was a blur. Caroline watched from inside the car as the looters moved to act against the threats of her father. As they moved to draw weapons of their own her father shot one of them dead. But before he could even turn to the other two they already had their guns out. After a few more loud bangs rang out the remaining men fled the scene, abandoning both their friend and their victim. By the time Carie reached him, her father had already passed.
She wasn't left without a safety net, however. Her parents had set up life insurance policies in case such events had occurred, their combined payouts along side her inheritance supplying her with enough money to comfortably live out the rest of her days. But such a life hardly sounded appealing to her. The events left a lasting impression on the young woman, one that would shape the way the rest of her life was lived. It made her reevaluate her priorities, eventually leading her to become what some would call a 'doomsday prepper' Though not as extreme as some, she became obsessed with being prepared for any disaster that may strike. She left her hometown and set off in search of a more remote place to settle down, hopping from town to town throughout the years. Eventually her search would lead her to Anytown, USA. Of all the places she had called home, Anytown was the first in some time she actually considered making a long term stay out of. Not because it was a nice place or she made a good friend. There was something off about this town. As odd as it may sound, she felt that people were going to need her here.
