personality
abel is a very highly strung young man, excitable and anxious, whose intuition is keen and mind is sharp. while admittedly a tad cautious, he is resourceful, honest, and fairly helpful. that said, his help, as well as his trust, come with a price and strings attached. he is incredibly flighty, all things considered, but this can be tied back to the aforementioned anxiety. while he is reserved when it comes to voicing his feelings, that reservation does not prevent him from having to deal with the thoughts that incessantly swirl around his mind. he is insecure about his physical appearance and various facets of his personality, though he is sure-footed when it comes to believing in his ability to achieve whatever he sets his mind to.
history
abel josé montoya had the displeasure of being born into jamestown, virgina, one of the oldest settlements in the united states of america. his family resided within one of the oldest, creakiest houses on the block. it was a cheery yellow with white shutters, various beautiful flowers kept and tended along the front deck by his wonderfully gentle mother. the outside of the house didn't begin to make up for the creepy things that happened within it, however - and his family couldn't afford to move.
doors would slam shut in the middle of the night (or fly open, had they already been closed). the water would turn on and off at will, so it seemed, and they couldn't be bothered with pets, as whenever an animal was brought into the home it was too terrified to move. abel swears to this day he was nearly dragged from his bed several times in the night when he was younger, and no one would believe the young boy when he said that the monsters under his bed and in his closet were real. having his reality questioned so is what fostered his anxiety, as well as his paranoia.
things gradually settled as the boy aged. strange things still happened, but they didn't happen as often. his grandmother had told him that it was because his father had finally left and the spirits were no longer being irritated by his tumultuous soul. that said, all of the incidents when he was younger lead to an intense desire to investigate the world of the supernatural as he aged, which lead abel to an obsession with old things and so-called hauntings in the jamestown area.
once his mother got engaged to a man from anytown, his family packed up and moved to a small, cozy house within its borders. while other children his age had been going to school together for years, abel felt he was the outcast; he knew no one, knew none of the good gossip, and was hardly willing to get involved with it. so he did what he did best - sucked it up and worked by himself, for himself. he spent a lot of quality time on the internet and in the small gym they had in the basement, hoping to get rid of his chubby little belly and his squirrel-like cheeks.
as he aged, he hardly noticed the changes in his physical appearance - he was much too concerned with how eerily calm anytown was, and began to develop theories on government interference. as he graduated, he went to an out of town university, coming home during the summers, and somehow ended up back in anytown in the end. he now rents a small farmhouse that he's filled with all of his paranormal hunting gadgets and intends to launch his own business as a private investigator - until then, he's been employed by the local post office, though people have already been complaining about how spooky the mailman looks with bags under his eyes. why does he always look so tired, anyway? and can he actually hack everyone's wifi?
