Gabie is, in essence, nothing special. She is one of those indispensable background characters that fill up the void behind the main characters. Often colorless in the background. One of those nondescript teenage girls that you can easily ignore because she just passes, never says a thing and keeps to herself. She even makes herself invisible enough that bullies don't even notice her. She's not in any teams or clubs or any activities, she just listens in class, fills up her exams, gets high grades without trying much and just picks up her things and gets home to dive into the magnificent world of online communities where you can be whatever you want.
Born and raised in Anytown, in a decent house in Westside, where she was home-schooled for 12 years by her single mom. Looked after by the neighbors when Mommy wasn't home, that family being the only other human beings in Anytown she can actually have a conversation with. Her room is her happy place, where the light made by the various open screens reflect off her freckled face while she happily surfs the internet. Playing MMOs and virtual tabletops, creating characters on boards, studying all kinds of subjects... She has a Fact Checker Status on Wikipedia, is a 4Chan Moderator and trolls people on Tumblr. In this Virtual World, she is OrangeCandy, a confident golden goddess.
But when she leaves the safety of the darkness of her room, for example to refill her stock of snacks and cola, she becomes Gabie McCarthy, the shut-in, light-skinned, ginger girl that never says a word. Some people actually think she's mute. She has dozen of friends online... but only one outside of her room. When her Mom gets tired of her skulking inside, she orders her outside by disabling the Wifi Network and Gabie always goes to the same place to enjoy a milkshake for a couple of hours before coming home and jumping back in her world of Ones and Zeroes.
The only meal she can cook is Toast (and not that well even) and thinks her clothes magically wash themselves after stuffing them in the bin in the washroom. Her lack of social interaction made her a very childish person with no filter and the reason her friend can stand her is because he's not any better than she is.
She started noticing the weird things going on in Town when, on another school night at 3 am, she was pursuing her quest of finding something online that would gross her out. So far she had a flawless score of Nothing-I-Saw-Bothered-Me and let me tell you that she saw some SERIOUS shit. Think of the most horrifying thing you saw online. She saw it and maybe even chuckled. Well, that night, she was, once again, exploring the Deep Web and something caught her attention. A forum. Nothing special in a sense. Tight community, nice people all talking about... some kind of Game?
Neuroverse was the name and from what she understood... it felt like Second Life or something like that but even though she wasn't playing, the community was so welcoming that she decide to stay and lurk there a bit. She learned that it was actually... an alternate, digital reality that was, as one of the members put it, connected to the collective hive subconscious of Humankind. She found the idea ludicrous and when she said "pull the other one, it's got bells on", the other guy said he'd show her.
That's when her computer screen started shining in a blue hue which concentrated on a single point at the middle of the screen and then Zapped her on forehead with a lightning bolt. When she opened her eyes, she was standing in a plain,, surrounded by small buildings and other people... in all kinds of shapes, clothes and carrying various weapons. A man was in front of her and presented himself as being the same user she was talking to a couple seconds ago. He presented the Neuroverse and said people here were exploring the human mind and defending it from fears, nightmares and worse things. He mentioned she could join... but she had to make the Special Helmet, of which she could find the blueprints on the forum. And then he kicked her in the chest and she woke up with a jolt in her room, gasping for air.
She couldn't help herself and charged back to the forum and find the blueprint thread... and she realized that... well... diamond dust doesn't grow on trees. She abandoned this community. The experience was a bit too weird even for her. But since then, she would sometimes hallucinate some kind of... HUD in her vision, with HP and Endurance bars and things like that but it would disappear when she'd try to focus on it. She would also see all kinds of things in the corners of her vision that would disappear every time she turned her head.
After some research she found out that she wasn't the only one who had experienced or still experiences some weird phenomena around town and got curious enough to actually get out of her den of darkness to try and investigate... maybe even join those Runaways when she manages to overcome her phobia of social interaction.
