Sue kind of has it easy in the deadly jungle that is school. Since he was a kid, he's been getting good grades (especially maths), he's been involved in sports (specifically baseball), he’s the friendly guy people gravitate towards, he’s the bully bullier, and he's had a few recommendations and invitations from prestigious universities from out of town. But it doesn't really grab Sue's attention. The kid isn’t interested in things such as fame or research or scientific pursuits or any far fetched goals like that.
Nah, when he graduates, all he wants is to take over and continue the paternal family business: Sanchez's Delicatessen Shoppe (est. 1956), a milkshake/soda/brunch/greasy spoon restaurant thingie back in North End. Mom usually isn’t at home, because she works for a business in the Big City Next Door, so it’s the Padre and the Abuela (also Chow, the golden retriever, who kind of hangs out and is just happy to be there) who taught Sue that there was nothing better than cooking, or painting a smile on someone’s face.
Ain’t no better way to put a smile on a face than 99¢ hot dog and a complementary milkshake.
One thing changed Sue’s idyllic vision of Anytown, USA, though. Sanchez’s Delicatessen Shoppe has been getting weird attention lately. One day they found a small purple pamphlet dubbed “Join the Happy Men!”, inside of which was just a trio of eyes, two closed ones and an open third one at forehead height. One other time, Sue was coming back from baseball practice later at night when he spotted a duo of purple-suit wearing people with full-face, three eyed masks walking away from the Shoppe. Sure enough, there was another of the pamphlets. And yet another time, he felt himself being followed, and the three-eyed symbol seemed to pop in the corner of his vision - but every time he tried to face it, it was gone.
One time, though, he found himself face first with a pair of “Happy Men” - in the saturday crowd, they bumped into each other, staring dumbfoundedly at each other for a few seconds. A chase ensued, with Sue trying to get answers from this weird group. But they disappeared as soon as they reached a corner - when the teen managed to catch up, the sound of a gigantic steel door clanged and banged, and all he saw was bricks moving by themselves, spinning and shutting down forming a non descript, graffitied wall.
Except one of the graffitis was of the three eyes, painted in purple.
So things are weird around town. And Sue isn’t going to let some weird cult, sect, or illuminati assholes poison his life by spying on him, or trying to recruit him. No, he’s going on the offensive. Curiosity calls, and beckons Sue to investigate just what the hell the Happy Men are - and the Runaways seem like the perfect people to trust in this. Some have problems on their own, of course - and Sue’s eager to help.
