history
bodie ford was born in a military family: his father was in the military, his grandfather was in the military, his older sister was in the military, a lot of his cousins and uncles and aunts were in the military...you can see where this is going. his childhood was typically all-american and midwestern: he played football, he was homecoming king, he had bonfire parties in the pasture out behind his grandparents' house with cheap beer and country music.
it was natural for bodie to go into the service too - the army, the same as most of his family members (though his black sheep of a sister was in the marines) - but it wasn't what he really wanted to do. he had a girlfriend and he wanted to go to university and go to be a dentist, of all things. when he would've been getting ready for finals in his freshman year, he was getting ready for his first combat tour in iraq.
but he worked as a dental specialist while deployed, alongside his dental corps officer and a handful of other specialists, so it wasn't... terrible. he wrote to his girlfriend when he could. his platoon was in a relatively safe area, keeping a presence and working with locals of the nearby town - but morale was dismal.
on his first visit home, things didn't get much better. people disapproved of the war (bodie wasn't too fond of it either, really), his girlfriend left him, and he was left with a settling feeling of homesickness in his stomach on the flight back to iraq.
but after ten years, bodie was done. just like that he was back in civilian life, and adjustment was hard. thankfully, anytown hadn't changed much over the years. he now works as a dental hygienist at anytown dental, trying to remember the relaxed pace of midwestern life.
